The fe atured speaker wa s Christy MacL ear, e xecutive director of the Philip Johnson Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut. It was built in 1948–49 and amended some what over the years. Frederick Noyes, the B oston architect who is the son of architect a nd industrial designer Eliot Noyes (1910–1977), introduc ed MacL ear to the standing-room- only crowd of 200. At one point he unbuttoned his shirt to reveal his Glass House T-shirt, which said, “Modern, Over 50, a nd Well Preser ved.” MacLea r made the point that attendance has fallen at historic houses every where, sometimes by as much as 50% over the last ten years. The statistic leads one to conclude that the ba sic concept of these places needs re a sse ssment. At Glass House, instead of focu sing on the home itself and trying to replicate the lives of Philip Johnson a nd his partner, David Whitney, MacLear and her staff have created what they call “a platform for c onversations” about Modernism a nd its preser vation. Saving Modernist structures wa s her lecture theme. She na med places around the country that have already been lost a nd some that have been recently saved, such a s Farnsworth House, completed in 1951 by Mies van der Rohe near Plano, Illinois. She ta lked about a new type of real estate agent who specializes in selling Modernist home s. By her count, there are now 17 of them. Their buyers and that market are geographically dispers- ed, she noted. It’s not a regional movement. People inter est ed in Modernism live every where — Paris, Seoul, and also Boston. “ The show is going to morph,” Fusco said in summarizing his assessment of AD 20/21. “It’s going to find its way. It’s going to find its market. It’s a living, breathing thing. Some exhibitors will inevitably drop out, a nd others w ill take their places.
