Purnell FAIA, a principal at Devroua x + Purnell Architects and Pla nners PC in Washington, D.C ., with a champagne rec eption a nd the opening of the exhibition 2% Women of Color in Design. The reception wa s a well-kept surprise for the 84th president of the America n Institute of Architects, hosted by the BAC, Boston NOMA, and Friends of Marshall Purnell; Micha el Johnson, Anthony Brown, Stefani Organ and Pamela Colbert. The evening began with the opening of the 2% Women of Color in Design exhibition in BAC’s McCormick Gallery. “2%” is an exhibition curated by Audrey O’Haga n, O’Haga n Architects, a nd Cedric Sinclair, Boston A rchitectura l College, which displays the work of thirty women designers, many of whom are among the exclusive ranks of the two hundred plus female architects licensed in the United States. The BAC recognized AIA’s nation al convention a s the opportunity to show the stellar design work with design projects including built and unbuilt projects, landscape, f urniture design, a nd resea rch representing a divers e, e xperienced b ody of established, licensed architects such as Allsion Willia ms of Perkins + Will and emerging profe ssiona ls such a s Kimberly Dowdell of HOK. The gallery remained very busy throughout the week, in conjunction with other AIA related events held at the BAC, including the pa rty with the Fellows that was held in BAC’s 951 building. The BAC community welcomed many AIA Board members, including in-coming AIA President Marvin Malecha; iconic African American architects Robert T. C oles, Sharon Sutton, J. Max Bond Jr., M. David Lee; Cheryl McAfee and Bill and Ivenue Sta nley in a filled to capacity Cascieri lecture hall to witness one of the most emotional moments of the 2008 AIA Nationa l Convention.
