FEATURE]INSIDE:OUT II programming, gender influences on disciplinary perceptions, how overlapping courses are identified on different campuses, how media marketing of professional design has skewed prospective student perceptions of what the fields are actually like in practice, and how some interior design programs are jointly accredited by CIDA for professional practice preparation, and by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) as preparation for entering arts fields. Discussion of the differing bodies of knowledge of these fields was informed by reference to the study of entry paths to interior design careers by Denise A. Guerin Ph.D., FIDEC, ASID, IIDA (University of Minnesota), available at w w w.careersininteriordesign.com. We initiated a sur vey of the characteristics of each of the programs present, because data on enrollments, programs offered, underlying philosophies and career trajectories on the individual programs is not readily available. It was agreed that due to the richness and complexity of the discussions, the conversation should be continued at the Interior Design Educators' Conference (IDEC) at the end of March, , in St. Louis. It was further agreed that this growing ad hoc group should make a connection with the ACSA's working group on Interior Design, should collect model curricula from schools with integrated curricula, and should propose a "topic session" for upcoming ACSA and IDEC annual meetings. Overall, the participants left with a great sense of hope (particularly following the election results received the night before the meeting) that perceived voids between the disciplines could be bridged by thoughtful educators dedicated to educating a new generation of practitioners with skills that draw upon the distinctive bodies of knowledge found in each field, without being constrained by current beliefs and perceptions of how the disciplines will continue to evolve and better serve the public into the future.
