In THE MIDST OF A CHALLEnGInG ECOnOMy AFFIRMInG OUR EDUCATIOnAL VISIOn American Institute of Architects Convention and the Interior Design Educators Conference, and we hosted elected officials, our friends working in public realm and cultural affairs, and those in the design community when we spent time in Washington DC in support of our students’ visit for the Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Competition. We awarded honorary doctorates to long-time BAC supporter Tad Stahl FA IA; A I A Past President Marshall Purnell, FAIA; distinguished landscape architect Carol Johnson; and the distinguished Interior Designer William Hodgins ASID. advancement We have renovated 20,000 square feet of space at 9 51 Boylston Street, doubled the size of our online degree program, hosted a conference on campus utilization of historic properties, and moved our back-office Institutional Technology operations to a new rental space on newbury Street. We initiated staff diversity training while developing and implementing a school-wide diversity plan. We co-hosted a meeting of the AIA’s Large Firm Roundtable, brought on and fully staffed a new Vice President for Institutional Advancement, sent staff to present at educational conferences across the United States and Europe, distrib- uted more marketing materials than at any time in our history, and achieved a budgetary surplus despite challenging economic times and without staff lay-offs or furloughs. no other design school in America has accomplished as much as we have in the past year, two years, or five years. Our closely-balanced budget over the past several years has focused on supporting BAC students with improvements in the quality of the educational experience both in Academics and in Practice; with the development of methods to determine, assess and support student success; with the development of core faculty, and expanded and improved quality of space available to serve our students. We have increased the variety of programs within Continuing Education and Degree Programs, onsite and online. This has supported our vision for increasing hands-on education and international opportunities. These investments represent the vast majority of the increased costs prioritized in our budgets for the years 2007–2009. Re-envisioning This pattern will likely continue for the next few years, budgets permitting. Our investments in students, facilities, technology and online programs both emerge from and shape our strategic planning processes. We have responded to the economic downturn by expanding our Practice alternatives for students, closely managing our budgets, and diversifying our revenue sources. We anticipate that new approaches to institutional advancement will expand sponsorship, grants, and giving opportunities. These challenging times present opportunities for change and for re-visioning our priorities, while maintaining our core commitments to accessibility and practice-based education. The vision and strategies we employ to provide excellent practice-based education are adapting rapidly to prepare our graduates for a world that is becoming very different from what we knew a decade ago. We continue to value your intellectual input and financial support as the BAC emerges as a design education leader for the 21st Century. thinking will be more prominent both within and outside traditional design fields.
