The Alumni Boa rd recently welcomed ba ck Representative Chris Walsh, for an evening of convers ation about his path to the legislature, a nd discussion of projects and legislation of interest to the design commu- nity. Representative Wal sh is in his first term in the State L egislature, representing the 6th Middlesex District, approximately 40,000 con stituents. He sits on the Tourism, A rts a nd Cultural Committee, Tra nsportation Committee, a nd the C ommittee on Children a nd Families, Persons with Disabilities. He has been an architect in Framingham for more than 25 years and is the only registered Architect in the legislature. Representative Walsh attended the BAC “for many, many, many nights” throughout the 1970’s a nd subsequently has returned to te ach and a s a visiting critic. Chris ser ve s a s the current President of the Central Massachusetts American Institute of Architects as well as being the previous chair of the Framingham Historic District Commission. One initiative Representative Wal sh ha s undertaken is bill H03571, a n a ct e stablishing the position of Architect of the State House. This bill will create a pro bono advocacy position of “A rchitect of the State House” who will advoc ate for the need to preser ve the State House a nd other significa nt buildings in the C ommonwealth. Further, it will establish a fundraising mechanism for special projects at the State House. He is also working as a co- chair of the State House Preser vation Caucus to enc ourage people to start paying attention to the architectura l needs of the State House.
